Pilates can do it all

2 questions for Pilates trainer Elvira Rumetshofer

Can you still remember your first Pilates session and what do you recommend for beginners?

Yes, I have to smile. I couldn't have imagined how strenuous these ‘small’ movements could be. For beginners, I recommend not being so hard on yourself, concentrating on the movements, breathing and not forgetting to smile. Having fun is the most important thing.

What role does breathing play in Pilates?

Breathing plays a very important role in Pilates. I often find that beginners hold their breath during training. That's not a good thing, of course, because breathing in and out correctly is the only way to really engage the centre of the body. Joseph Pilates once said that participants must first learn to breathe properly. Breathing means life!
